TRAINING QUESTIONS

I was recently asked the specifics of my current training and daily activities. Here is the dealie-yo…

I have 120 hours scheduled over the next 8-weeks (starting April 28th). The first two weeks were on-snow in British Columbia (30 hours). Activities during that camp included mostly skiing, strength and running.

The current 3-week training block (42 hours) is to be complete here, at home in Idaho. The skiing is not good enough to chase and so the training has shifted from skiing to roller skiing (yes it is true, I am roller skiing already). This how my week looks:

Mon: off, pm- core strength
Tues: double pole, pm- bike race
Wed: run and strength, pm- easy swim or spin
Thurs: L3 roller intvls (skate), pm- run+core strength
Fri: run and strength, pm- off
Sat: hill climb (bike race), pm - recovery swim
Sun: OD combo workout (run/roll)

I am currently nursing an achilles injury. As it heals, I will start to run more but I am keeping it short and easy with plenty of time between runs right now.

The next two-week block (37 hours) will be on-snow in Bend, Oregon for our second team camp of the year. Scheduling will depend on snow conditions, however I imagine that we will be skiing in the mornings and running or alternative conditioning in the afternoons.

The last week (14 hours) of said 8-week block will be back in Ketchum, Idaho. I am shooting for a full achilles recovery by this time and will be doing a significant amount of running and bounding. This is what this 8th week might look like:

Mon: 2:00 double pole,
pm- 1:30 run, :45 strength
Tues: 2:00 rollerski w/ specific strength and speed
Wed: 2:00 run, :45 core strength
pm- short-track mtn. bike race 1:00
Thurs: 2:00 hill bounding intvls
Fri: easy recovery run 1:00, prep for race
Sat: Red Fish Lake Triathlon, Olympic dist.
Sun: easy recovery spin or off

What was the game you were playing in the video with the blue/green tube - was it a kids toy or a training tool used to improve reaction time? Do you do any training exercises for increasing reaction time?

The game we were playing is called Elefun (elephant + fun...it should be Elephun maybe) and is made for kids aged 3-5. It is not for training, just for fun.

We do reaction time drills, but they are generally more specific. Some of our speeds begin from a standstill, which simulates a start. We have someone else do the countdown to mimic the gun going off without the sprinter knowing when. There are more roller ski drills and lots on foot that are helpful and really fun...maybe those will compile a future video.

Thanks for the inquiries, keep them coming!
